ANATOMY & THE APEX PRINCIPLE

Unlike standard ball bearings, which have a single point of contact, tapered roller bearings distribute loads along a continuous line, drastically increasing their weight-carrying capacity. The Cup and Cone: The assembly consists of two primary separable components. The inner race, cage, and rollers form the cone, while the separate outer race is called the cup. The Apex Point: Geometrically, the angled project lines of the rollers and raceways all converge at a single, precise apex point on the bearing centerline. This mathematical alignment achieves a true rolling motion, minimizing operating friction, heat, and wear.

WHY THEY ARE MOUNTED IN PAIRS

A single-row tapered roller bearing can only accommodate axial (thrust) forces pushing in one. direction. Because radial forces on the angled rollers inherently induce a secondary axial thrust force, these bearings must be . installed in opposed pairs (either back-to-back or face-to-face configurations). Mechanics apply a specific amount of mechanical . preload during installation to properly lock the assembly and ensure rigid shaft guidance.
